Requirements for Entry

  • A relevant good degree in National Curriculum core or foundation subject (other degrees with appropriate content will be considered alongside relevant experience).
  • Appropriate ‘A’ level or equivalent qualifications plus Grade C (or equivalent) in GCSE Mathematics and English.
  • Confidence in using appropriate ICT skills.
  • Minimum two weeks or equivalent, school placement experience before commencing course, or other recent activities that demonstrate a particular interest in working with children.
  • Ability to travel between different training locations within the county
  • A completed self declaration health questionnaire - applicants may be required to undertake a medical examination arranged by the Occupational Health Unit of Cornwall Council
  • Declaration of any criminal convictions through an enhanced clearance from Criminal Record Bureau and registration with the Independent Safeguarding Authority. The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not apply to the teaching profession.

Selection Criteria

An application form and interview designed to assess suitability to teach will focus on the applicant's:

  • Commitment to the teaching profession and improving the lives of young people.
  • Enthusiasm for your chosen subject and a capacity to inspire learners.
  • Awareness of current educational issues.
  • Intrinsic passion for learning.
  • Commitment to own professional development.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with both pupils and adults.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to act upon advice.
  • Readiness for hard work.

Interviews take place at the main base or the partnership schools and
include written tests in literacy and numeracy.
