Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses
Subject knowledge enhancement courses help you gain the depth of knowledge you’ll need to train to teach your chosen subject.
These courses are aimed at those who have already been offered a place on a postgraduate/professional graduate initial teacher training course subject to completion of a subject knowledge enhancement course. The courses will help you identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own, such as certain practical elements of design and technology.
Subject Enhancement, Extension & Booster courses
Enhancement courses are 6 months in length and aimed at potential secondary trainees in chemistry, maths or physics who do not have the full subject knowledge required, but do possess some post A level or professional experience in these subjects.

- Chemistry Enhancement run by University College Plymouth MarJon www.ucpmarjon.ac.uk
- Physics Enhancement run by the University of Plymouth www.plymouth.ac.uk/pec
- Maths Enhancement run by University College Plymouth MarJon www.ucpmarjon.ac.uk and also delivered jointly by Cornwall SCITT tutors.
Three month Modern Foreign Language extension courses are aimed at graduates with one foreign language but little or no French or German.
Participants on most enhancement or extension courses are paid a bursary and are expected to immediately take a secondary teacher training course in the relevant subject.
Subject booster courses are two-week courses aimed to boost trainees’ subject knowledge and ensure that they are well prepared for the challenges of the classroom. They are offered in a range of secondary subjects.
Cornwall SCITT currently offers a Modern Foreign Language 5 day course and a 5 day Design & Technology booster course immediately prior to the start of the PGCE course, and a 5 day Science course during the half term holidays.
