Subject knowledge enhancement courses
Pre-initial teacher training subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses are intensive programmes for graduates who need to develop a greater depth of subject understanding prior to training for qualified teacher status.
Who are they for?
These courses are for graduates who are interested in teaching but who need to develop their subject knowledge to teach secondary pupils in chemistry, mathematics, physics (26 week enhancement courses) and French or German (14 week extension courses), Enhancement courses are suitable for graduates with experience of the subject to at least A-level standard. This could be through holding an A-level in the subject, having an element of it in your degree course and/or occupational experience of the subject.
Modern languages extension courses are specifically designed to help graduates who have one language at degree standard, or are native speakers, to develop capability in teaching either French or German up to key stage 3 (ages 12-14). This is because many schools require teachers to teach two languages. If you have no prior experience of the language, you will receive extra tuition and support as appropriate.
Bursary available
While on the course you will receive a bursary of up to £7,200 (depending on the subject and length of your course). For more information contact a course provider in your region.
Applying for SKE courses
If you think you need to go on an enhancement or extension course, you should first apply to an initial teacher training (ITT) course. If the course provider considers you to have the attributes to make a good teacher, you will be offered a conditional ITT place and referred to the SKE course provider in your region. It is also a good idea to contact the SKE course provider in your region directly.
If you are applying for a PGCE, you can indicate on your application form that you are interested in doing a subject SKE course.
After your SKE course
Upon your successful completion of one of these courses, you are expected to go straight into an initial teacher training course leading to qualified teacher status (QTS).

Subject knowledge enhancement short courses
Subject knowledge enhancement courses help you gain the depth of knowledge you'll need to train to teach your chosen subject.
These courses are aimed at those who have already applied for or started postgraduate initial teacher training. The courses will help you identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own, such as certain practical elements of design and technology.
What subjects can I take a subject enhancement short course in?
There are currently courses available for the following secondary-phase subjects:
- chemistry
- design and technology
- information and communication technology (ICT)
- mathematics
- modern languages
- physics
How long do the short courses take?
Most subject knowledge enhancement courses comprise the equivalent of two weeks' study, but courses may be up to 12 weeks long. Depending on the individual course, you can take this all in one go as a full-time course, or spread over a longer period part-time, possibly through evening drop-in sessions or weekend courses.
When can I take a subject knowledge enhancement short course?
You can take a course before or during your initial teacher training.
Where are the short courses available?
Subject knowledge enhancement short courses are available all over England – please see the TDA website: www.tda.gov.uk
