Train to be a secondary school teacher with the prestigious Cornwall School Centred Initial Teacher Training programme

Media Studies (14 – 19)

The aim of the PGCE in Media Studies is to train graduates from a professional background to deliver Media Studies across the 14 – 19 age range. This course would suit graduates who have a media based degree;  relevant industrial or commercial experience would also be of value. You will be flexible and enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team in a range of contexts.

The diversity of Media Studies will be explored and celebrated; you will support the subject knowledge development of your peers through delivering a workshop based on your own area of expertise.  Both the practical and theoretical aspects of Media Studies are integral to successful Media teaching; subject sessions will encourage evaluation of theoretical aspects and consideration of their application in the classroom, while practical workshops will be offered to further develop your technical skills.  As a 14-19 PGCE, it will give you unique insight into the transition from Key Stage 4 to post-16 courses.

The PGCE in Media Studies is an innovative and exciting programme. As well as taking part in a comprehensive range of professional educational studies, you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Media teaching and further develop your experience by taking part in the following:

• Working with practitioners from a range of creative and media backgrounds.

• GCSE and A level Media studies teaching.

• Experience of teaching in both a  school and college environment.

• Assessment, monitoring and standardisation procedures.

• Experience of other media based qualifications such as Film Studies, BTEC and the Creative and Media Diploma.

• Experience of planning and delivering the Media curriculum, including SEN and Gifted and Talented.

• Teaching a second related curriculum subject at Key Stage 3 and to GCSE level.

• Use of ICT and related creative technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

You will work with a curriculum area mentor in each placement and they will provide guidance and opportunities for you to plan, manage, deliver and assess aspects of Media Studies. In addition, you will also choose a  related supplementary subject to teach at Key Stage 3 to support and extend your 14-19 experience.
