Cornwall SCITT welcomed seventeen potential teachers to a Get into Teaching Taster Course on Monday 17th October. The course was an opportunity for those considering a career in teaching to find out more about what a career in teaching entailed. On the first day, the trainees explored the role of the teacher, and found out more about the current developments in school priorities and the curriculum. The participants then had the opportunity to visit one of Cornwall SCITT’s partnership schools for a two day school experience, before returning to Truro College to reflect on their experience.
The participants returned from their school experience enthused at the prospect of working with young people in Cornwall. Many of them commented on the excellent behaviour of the students, and were impressed with the wide variety of learning strategies which they had seen being used in their placement school.
Actual school experience is vital for deciding whether teacher training is for you. Having this structured with discussions about the practicalities of an application is invaluable.
Many of the participants had the opportunity to meet current SCITT trainees and recent graduates from Cornwall SCITT’s training programme, which gave them further insight into what to expect from their training year. During the final evening session the participants were introduced to the application process and next steps for those who were ready to make an application.
