Training tomorrow's teachers, today

Inclusion, Diversity and Equality Statement

Cornwall SCITT has a strong and well-established commitment to creating an inclusive, equitable and welcoming training environment for all. Aligned with our core values of Integrity, Positivity and Equality, we value diversity of background, identity and experience and actively work to identify and remove barriers so every trainee, mentor and colleague can thrive. We welcome applications from people with disabilities, those with protected characteristics and anyone with particular needs, and we will make reasonable adjustments throughout the application process and during training.

We continually review and refine our practice to ensure inclusion is consistently experienced across all aspects of the programme.

Our Approach

We work with our partnership schools to:

  • Promote and celebrate diversity across the teaching workforce in Cornwall and beyond
  • Foster a culture of respect, trust and openness where all voices are heard
  • Create safe learning and working spaces for trainees, mentors and staff
  • Model inclusive behaviours in curriculum design, teaching practice and assessment
  • Recognise and address conscious and unconscious bias through training and reflective practice
  • Understand and remove barriers that may affect trainees because of their identities or circumstances

How We Demonstrate This Commitment

  • Partnership working — we collaborate with local and national organisations to improve access and remove barriers for underrepresented groups
  • Flexible routes — we offer flexible and part-time training routes where possible to support diverse life circumstances
  • Financial support — we operate an access fund to support trainees who do not qualify for bursaries or scholarships
  • Training and development — we provide ongoing DEI training for SCITT staff and partnership colleagues and embed inclusive practice across our Professional Studies and Subject Pathway curricula
  • Curriculum development — we continue to diversify and decolonise subject curricula and include sessions on equality, unconscious bias, LGBTQ+ inclusion and anti-racism
  • Reasonable adjustments — we use Personal Support Plans to record and deliver reasonable adjustments for trainees and applicants
  • Wellbeing and safeguarding — we provide a range of mental health and wellbeing supports and clear, confidential routes for raising concerns
  • Monitoring and improvement — we collect and review diversity data to inform continuous improvement and celebrate cohort diversity
  • Trainee voice — we seek regular feedback from trainees and partners to shape our practice and policies

Impact

Through this work, trainees are well supported to succeed and develop the knowledge and confidence to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantage.
